This year, I've decided to try something new - Buddy and I are going to do 25 Days of Christmas Cookies! I figured, since Julie (& Julia) can bake through an entire cookbook in a year, and ABC Family can do 25 Days of Christmas, I can bake cookies for 25 days (plus there are a lot of recipes I want to try, and I really need to get into the holiday spirit). I'm going to put the list here and edit as I go, so there will only be one posting (with updates about how good). I might even put the recipes if anyone is interested :)

December 1: white chocolate macaroon - a new favorite! Lisa was supposed to meet me in Chicago and fly with me, but we hit our first snafu of the trip - Lisa forgot to mention to Mom to get the passport out of the safety deposit box, so she had to delay one day. Flying alone is fun and not fun at the same time. While it's nice to be able to relax and such, it's kind of a pain when you have to go to the bathroom or want to take a nap or walk at the airport. You don't want to leave your bags unattended, but having to carry them around is kind of a pain. No matter, I met a very nice couple on the flight from Chicago to Tokyo who happen to be missionaries in Chiang Mai, Thailand. They are curently living in the States, but we had a nice conversation about oh so many different things.

The flights themselves were not that bad - just LONG.....and since I didn't move around enough, my ankles now look like cankles from blood pooling. There were movies and food on the planes, but airplane food is just so-so, and while it's nice that they have movies, it really cuts into the sleeping time :)

I flew into Bangkok, Thailand around 11pm local time (12 noon EST) on Tuesday, March 30th - almost a full day and a half after I left Charleston. Rachel and Kent met me at the airport, and we took a taxi back to her dorm. Did you know they drive on the opposite side of the road here? THe city (at least at night) didn't look that much different from big cities in the US except for the language on the signs.

The weather here is REALLY hot and humid (not much different from Charleston in August). The beds are hard, and the custom is to remove your shoes before you enter the dorm - I don't know if it's just residential areas or what. I'm sure I"ll learn some more of the customs. We heard/saw lots of roaming animals last night (cats and dogs). They were so skinny - we heard the dogs howling at night. I met several of Rachel's friends, although I"m not sure I'd remember any names other than her roommate Libra, Kent, and Clara who let us stay in her room. Thanks, Clara!

Rachel has gone to class, and I am still trying to get used to the time change. We will go out and find something for lunch in a couple of hours. Tonight, we had back to the city to pick up Lisa from the airport. How exciting to be halfway around the world!

So, the new event for January was the hockey game. Buddy and I went this past weekend to see the Stingrays play. I had never been to a hockey game before, so I was expecting something like the Mighty Ducks. I was completely shocked when the "fighting" that I expected turned out to be nothing like I expected. I was expecting just normal fighting that happens with games that the refs break up and the game keeps going. I was astonished when I saw that "fighting" in adult hockey is really just a brawl that is totally barbaric and the guys just beat each other up...and everyone watches and cheers. I felt a little sick to my stomach after watching it.....while I completely understand the need to hit things...I thought that hockey in an of itself with all of the wall slamming and "checking" was enough hitting....where does the desire to just beat the snot out each come from??? Other than that...the hockey game was fun. I think we might go back in February for Pink in the Rink night :)

Unpacking a box a night - check (still tons to go)
Reading through Bible in year (on pace) - check
Exercising 3x a week - oops...not this week
Missing my sister in Thailand - check
New goal - stop spending $ until Buddy is done with school!!! - working on it

Things to do in 2010:

1. (well except for the blinds that I broke) We had some great help tonight and moved 2 truck loads and 1 car load of furniture and boxes. So, it is starting to really feel like home. I know I will miss things about the apartment, but I'm hoping that the house starts to feel more and more like home. I noticed tonight that the house seems to have lots of spiders. We saw a black widow outside that Mike graciously killed and several wolf spiders that we swept outside. I think spiders are better than roaches, but I'm not really keen on having either in the house. This week has been hard to get things done, since I have had so many obligations after work. Buddy has definitely done more than his share this week with getting things finished. Hopefully, when we get back from Emory & Henry on Sunday, we'll have some time to work on the cabinet doors or our bedroom. I think I'm almost ready to start sleeping at the new place - once we get the bed there of course. I keep forgetting to bring the camera back over here with the computer...I'll try to work on that.

We have finished the first bedroom - the guest room. It even has some furniture in it (ok, only a desk, but still). The craft room/2nd guest room is almost done. I have to vacuum and deep clean the carpets and make sure the last coat of paint looks ok. We did agree to paint each wall a different color - all blue/green shades. It actually looks pretty good. If I can get the carpets finished tonight, then tomorrow we'll have some help with a truck to move the sewing desk and craft table and the bed for the guest room.

The master bedroom has been partially painted. Most of the walls were only previously painted one time, so they sucked up so much paint that they required a 2nd coat, even though we bought "one coat paint". Oh well - it is the next room to finish.

The kitchen cabinets have been primed and the first coat of paint has been put on the back of the doors. These are going to take some time to finish.

I did get a 10% off coupon to Lowe's, so we'll have to make our next trip really count!

We started off a little slow yesterday, but we still managed to accomplish quite a bit. After taking a car full of boxes over with us, we started out by clipping tree limbs off of the roof. We were about 1/3 of the way done when our neighbor came over and offered to let us borrow his pole saw - which made things much faster and easier!

Then we took a break and went for 1/2 price drinks at Sonic on our way to find out about the trash and recycle bins and of course our daily trip to Lowe's.

We also scrubbed the cabinet doors from the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. What a task! My hands were shriveled and peeling from the water by the time we were done, but the cabinets look so much better.

We also spackled all 3 bedrooms, and Buddy patched some holes in the walls. He fixed the light switch in the living room, so now we have a fan AND lights! We measured the 2 guest bedrooms and agreed on the paint, so today we will sand, vacuum, tape off those rooms, and paint.

I did take some pictures of the "before", so I will try to remember/figure out how to post those soon.

So the first day of home ownership went well. We were pretty productive, although Buddy is much more of a worker than me. My legs started hurting in the afternoon - I'm not used to being on my feet all day. I did make it until the end of the day, but there was some whining and complaining.

We reinstalled the GFCI outlets in the kitchen and 2 bathrooms with only one minor electrocution, but on the bright side, the breaker switches are now accurately labeled. We also replaced most of the lightbulbs with energy efficient CFL bulbs (this was my job as it was easy). We removed all of the kitchen cabinets and drawers and the hardware on them for cleaning and painting. I ran my first load of laundry (our volleyball shirts needed to be washed for tonight's game). Buddy replaced the toilet valve unit in the master bathroom, so now we have 2 working toilets!! He also swept out the garage, so now it is usable for the cabinet cleaning which is planned for today. We made another trip to Lowe's.....and even worked some coupon magic there. Which reminds me, I should probably look at the grocery ads for this week. We measured all the windows and blinds for replacements, although only 1 is really broken and 1 needs a turning handle.

Day 2 awaits...

Officially home owners!!!! Then, the kitchen cabinets - which we may have to start with since we need to clean them and have them dry before we can actually paint them.

Les has graciously agreed to let us borrow his ladder, so that's great news! Rachel and Kerry come on Friday to help us get started and so some painting. We are scheduled to close at 11 am on Wednesday, and then Buddy and I will start getting everything together. This weekend we purchased a carpet cleaner from Kohl's (great price!) and a chair that Buddy found at Goodwill to replace the ruined, falling apart blue Lazy Boy recliner that is so darn comfortable!

We still have lots of packing to. I'm hoping to pack some of the important paperwork stuff tonight and get that out of the way. This is all a bit jumbled and random, but if you know me at all, then you know that's how my mind functions.

We ordered the cute fork handles for the kitchen with a 10% off coupon from ebay! That seems a tad ridiculous to me....plus they bill 2 months behind. So, while are taking ownership on the 30th, we will receive a bill in October for the sewage used from about the middle of July to the middle of August - when we weren't owners. I understand that it will all come out in the wash....but I don't think it's a very efficient way to do things. So basically, I can use tons of sewage in the last 2 months I live here and not have to pay for it....since someone else will be getting that bill. How silly!

I was also asked to provide the copy of the check that cleared for our earnest money deposit. So, I got online, downloaded the copy of the check that had cleared, and faxed it to the mortgage broker. Then a week later, I receive a request from the lender to send an updated statement SHOWING the check had cleared. I have several problems with this. 1. If the check had not cleared, then why would it be posted to my account where I could print a copy of it. 2. They have the previous 2 months of statements from my accounts and the copy of the check that has cleared...which is more than enough information to show that there were sufficient funds in the accounts to clear the check. This is the same thing that happened with VCU when we were paying off the end of Buddy's school tuition. She wouldn't send the diploma until I sent her my bank statement. I sent a copy of the cleared check and the statement with everything EXCEPT the check blacked out (it's none of her business how much is in my account or other charges I've made as long as her check cleared). Needless to say, it was not enough information for her...so we had to wait until their bank said the check had cleared to get the diploma. Oh well - bureaucracy is everywhere!

On a positive note, we decided what type of flooring we want to put down - 100% natural floating bamboo flooring - the cherry color. We've also decided that we need to wait a while before we do this since it will be expensive, and everyone we've talked to at Lowe's has given us a different answer about whether the particular one we like is actually a floating floor or not. So, we will continue to research this, but in the meantime, we have decided to only clean and paint before we move. Then we'll have to decide exactly what we want to do with the kitchen and flooring and when we can afford to do this.

Sorry about not posting yesterday - I had a migraine, and Buddy got home late. I think we have decided to buy our hardware for the kitchen cabinets and drawers from Ebay. Buddy found the cutest fork handles, so that's the current plan. I'm not sure if we will use them for all cabinets or just the drawers, but we can't order them yet until we know how many we need anyway. I found some cute fish ones for the bathroom. (Such a minor decision, but it was fun to look at all the choices out there!)

I had to deal with some paperwork today, though. We had to decide on the insurance company and get a employment verification form filled out. The insurance has been a complete pain! First, we found out we had to get wind/hail from SC and flood from FEMA (which are purchased through insurance companies but should be the same price no matter what since they aren't really THROUGH the insurance companies). Then we had to decide on the amount of coverage and the deductible! Then we had to decide on the place to get our homeowner's through. I was very lucky not to have to deal with very much of this....Buddy did almost all of it!!! The biggest problem came with the flood insurance because we were told that it would be cheaper to assume the current policy and that it was currently being re-evalulated and would be even cheaper! (turns out not to be true!) The current policy was WAY expensive....so the re-evaluated policy was the same as a new policy. Needless to say, we went with a new flood policy through the same company as our homeowners so that we could get multi-line discounts. Long story short...we are using Nationwide since they were the cheapest for homeowner's (and we got multi-line discounts since we went through them to get our wind/hail and flood - which is not really through them). We still have to add on the jewelry rider (possibly a new policy with Nationwide), and for the time being, we are keeping our car insurance through Amica. It would have been nice to have it all through Amica, but they are not currently writing any coastal Carolina policies....but the car insurance was only a little more for EXCELLENT SERVICE!!!

Next decisions to make: paint colors for 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, window treatments, furniture to purchase (if there is any money left)....and what to do about the kitchen??

Updates on the house for today:
kitchen colors have been chosen:
walls = sassy peach
cabinets = summer wish (yellow)

That's really all the decisions we made today. In a day where email and text messages have taken over and "snail mail" is rarely used, we have forgotten how much fun it is to run to the mailbox and see what awaits us! And many of us probably do not even think about sending notes when we get a gift. It's easier just to call and say "thanks" over the phone or just not do anything (because after all, we deserved/earned that gift, and they know we appreciate it, right?).

Thank you notes don't have to be elaborate. They are supposed to be a simple statement of thank you. For anything that you receive - cash, gift, place to stay while traveling, etc - it is important to let that person know how thankful you are. By taking the time to write a couple of sentences and put a card in the mail, you show them that their efforts are appreciated. Writing thank you notes can be a chore, but it is worth the extra effort on your part!!! Did you know that when you thank someone for a gift, they are much more likely to send another one? Now, don't misunderstand, just because you don't say thank you doesn't mean that you won't continue to receive gifts, but I promise that the giver is probably reconsidering what they give you next time.

When it comes to family, it is harder to determine when to write a note. I mean, do you send your parents a note? What about your siblings? According to an article I recently read (link below), the general rule of thumb is that if you live under the same roof, you're off the hook. Other than that, you should be writing a note!

If you are the giver of a gift, you shouldn't be expecting a note, at least that shouldn't be the reason you give. While it is definitely nice to receive notes of appreciation to let you know that your gift is appreciated, you should be giving because you want to and not because it's expected.

I know I have a hard time when I give gifts to certain people because I so rarely feel that they were appreciated. It hasn't stopped me from giving, but there are definitely moments when I consider what I'm going to get or how much to spend because I don't feel that the recipient ever shows any sort of appreciation. There really is no excuse for not sending a thank you note; they don't require much effort, writing, money, time, etc.

If you are a parent, your children will only learn about this from you. It is something so important and so simple that even little children can write a note to say thank you. We, as a society, are so spoiled with getting what we want that we don't always realize that someone went out of their way to do something for us. I was blessed to have my parents instill in me at a very young age the importance of writing a thank you note. As a child, I dreaded writing these notes. They always sounded the same, and I could think of so many better things to do. I just recently learned that some of my tried and true ways of writing notes are not how they should be written. There are "do"s and "don't"s to thank you notes. I mean, I didn't know that you should send letters to your parents (since they don't live with me anymore). I guess I always thought that since they were my parents, it was expected. Also, did you know that you are supposed to write a thank you note when you interview with someone to thank them for the opportunity to interview? I really think this is a lost art, and people no longer realize how important it is to let someone know you do appreciate what they do.

http://www.themorningnews.org/archives/how_to/how_to_write_a_thankyou_note.php

So, Buddy and I went to see "UP", the new PIXAR movie, this weekend, and I have to say it was pretty good! I am continually impressed with PIXAR's quality of movies and the stories they come up with - such creativity! If you have ever seen a PIXAR movie, then you know that they usually show "shorts" at the beginning. The one this time was great! It was definitely one of my favorites!!!

The 3-D showing was good, and since we saw it on a Sunday night, there were very few people in the theater (a HUGE plus!). The 3-D glasses tend to get annoying after a while, but the movie was entertaining. It was sadder than I expected it to be, but still a great movie. I will definitely be adding it to my collection.

Other than seeing UP and spending some time with (some) family, the weekend was pretty stressful. Lots of driving and getting reprimanded/yelled at for my own personal views that I didn't impose on ANYONE. I mean, the election is OVER, and we already have a new president....does it really matter NOW who voted for him or aginst him? And do your political views make you "family" or "not family"? I don't think so....although to hear some of the conversations this weekend, you would have thought I was evil incarnate (or at least that's how I felt).....I mean, I totally think people are entitled to their own opinions, but that doesn't mean they can persecute me for my own thoughts/ideas/decisions!!!
All in all, I can't say it was one of the better weekends, but it was nice to spend some time away from work and hang out with Buddy.

Maybe next time we spend time with family, I'll just wear a shirt that says "I voted for him...if it bothers you, then don't talk to me!"

I am not that great at keeping in touch with friends once I move away, but I do have a couple of close friends that live away (in addition to my family) that I manage to keep in contact with on a semi-regular basis. Granted, they make a lot of the effort, but I like to feel that I do my part.

I usually don't like to talk on the phone...I would much rather talk in person or via email - it fits in better with my busy life, I don't zone out as easily, plus I can think through what I want to say before I say it. But I understand that some people need to talk on the phone, so I usually give in when friends call to chat.

Maybe it's just my bad memory (or selective memory), but one thing I CANNOT STAND is when someone gets mad at you and all of a sudden, they aren't speaking to you anymore. Maybe they quit calling (which at first seems like a blessing) or just avoid you when you're at the same event (maybe they had a bad day?). But when you notice that they've removed you as a friend on Facebook (I mean, come on, everyone is friends with EVERYONE on Facebook), I really feel like it has crossed a line....especially if they never told you what you did. (Maybe you really didn't do anything, and they are just being petty.) Whatever the reason, don't you think it's only fair to let the person you are upset with know WHY you are upset with them???? That's just common courtesy!!!! I'm not saying you have to remain friends (even on Facebook), but wouldn't it be nice to know what you did so that you don't do it with someone else and risk losing that friend?

At some point we all have to grow up and act our ages....and for most of us that means being an adult and telling people who have upset you exactly how/why. If you are not good at confrontation (speaking from experience here), there are lots of cowardly ways to do that....email, text messaging, asking another friend to pass on the reasons, etc - all of which are better than no reason! But I think it's totally immature and childish to just completely act like someone is no longer a part of your life (friend or otherwise) without a decent reason that both parties are aware of!

Buddy and I just started keeping track of our Weight Watchers points. This is day 2. I think it is completely unfair that just for being a guy he gets 8 points and I only get 2!!! Oh well. The first day was hard, but today has been a little easier. We'll see how long we can keep this up. I'm hoping that this will get us more motivated to eat better and lose some weight. It would have been smarter to clean out our cabinets first because since I don't get that many points, I can't finish up some of the stuff we already have at home (unless I want to starve and eat nothing else that day). I'm leaning towards having a free item one day a week to make things easier. I'm very impressed. It makes coming home in the evening less stressful since I don't have to stare at piles that need to be dealt with. We still have lots to go - the 2 bedrooms and my bathroom could use a really good cleaning (but since those are MY responsibilities and not Buddy's, they've taken longer to do).

At the beginning of the month, I received one of those email forwards that you fill out and send to all your friends. Since I was at work and needed a distraction (like always), I started filling it out. I got to "Three things you are looking forward to" and found that I wasn't really looking forward to anything this year. That totally depressed me, so I've been trying to think of new, fun things to do this year. Last year I went on a cruise to Alaska, the year before I got married, and before that I was in school, so I could always look forward to summer vacation no matter what else was planned. This year, though, I found myself really sad and morose (word of the day), so here's what I've come up with to look forward to.
1. New Book Club - starts in February - can't wait!
2. Choosing our mini-vacation out of a hat (Buddy and I are each going to list 5 places we want to go and then draw one of them out of the hat (maybe 2) and just go)!
3. Stained glass class

I'm hoping these help with the winter blues that I always face this time of year. Somehow, whenever January comes around, I find myself sinking into this pit of despair. I don't know if it's the cold, the gray, or just the fact that I have another year behind me, but it's pretty sad.

Well, it seems as if the country is dividing (at least among people I know). I am so disappointed in people who call themselves Christians and are bashing our new president-elect because of one or two views that they disagree on. The election was not a one-issue campaign, and I'm disappointed that Christians can't accept the country's decision and agree to pray for and support our new president (like they've done for the current one-even those of us that didn't like him still supported him as our president). The issues of abortion and gay marriage are important issues, but that doesn't mean that they are the ONLY issues or that they are more important than others. This country needs to make some changes, and I'm personally really excited that we have elected a new president that offers some great suggestions for change! But regardless of whether you voted for him or not, we should all pray for him as he enters this role. And remember, God is always in control, and He chose Obama as the leader for this great country that we live in. Don't doubt God.

And just to clear up a few facts that I've seen people misrepresent on their blogs/websites:
1. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii (which IS a US state), and his father was from Kenya (not India....not even the same continent)
2. If you don't make much money, you won't be taxed more
3. Abortion is not the only issue in this election, and Obama doesn't support "murdering" of innocent babies, he supports the right for a woman to choose, and he supports preventing unintended pregnancies to lower the number of abortions - by expanding access to contraception, health information, and preventative science

For those of you that make negative statements about our new president-elect, please check your facts before you go making judgements and wrong statements. It just causes people to get "up in arms" and fight about it.

Today is Election Day, and I have to say....I'm really curious as to how it's going to turn out. I've been told to keep my mouth shut about my opinion so as to not have problems at work and church with people who might disagree with me, so I'll probably try to adhere to that advice. In the meantime, I have so much work to do, and I just have no interest in doing it. Oh well.

I wish that Charleston got more color changing in the fall. The temperature has been nice, but more color would just make it feel so much more like fall.

On a positive note, I won both of my fantasy leagues this week! Go me! So now I just need to hold my position in one league and keep winning in the other to make the playoffs. We'll have to see how it goes.

Trying something new.....
